...Who is "Weird Al" Yankovic? Weird Al is the three time Grammy Award winning polka king of the music industry. He was born at 1:56 P.M. on October 23rd, 1959 to Nick and Mary Yankovic in Los Angeles, California. Al graduated from Lynwood High School as a straight-A student and Valedictorian when he was only sixteen years old! He then moved to San Luis Opispo to attend California Polytechnic University, where he got a degree in Architecture. He got his musical start through the Dr. Demento radio show, where The Good Doctor gave Al and his accordion their first airplay. Influenced by Spike Jones, Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, Shel Silverstein, and Frank Zappa, Weird Al forgot about his Architecture degree and became music's foremost comedian. Al always makes sure to get permission from the original artists before parodying them - most of whom are flattered by the spoof. Kurt Cobain said he didn't realized he'd made it until he heard the "Weird Al" Yankovic parody! Al doesn't just make fun of other songs, either. About half his catalogue is original songs, meaning he wrote both the music and the lyrics.
